Saint Catherine of Genoa; a Thought on Purgatory

Saint Catherine of Genoa (Caterina Fieschi Adorno) was born in Genoa, Italy in 1447. St. Catherine was also know as a mystic. She was greatly admired for her lifetime work among the sick and the poor especially during the ravishing plague in Genoa in 1497. She died in that city in 1510.

Saint Catherine of Genoa, known as the "theologian of Purgatory," experienced the fires of Purgatory while still alive. She writes:

The greatest suffering of the souls in Purgatory, it seems to me, is the awareness that something in them displeases God, that they have deliberately gone against His great goodness...

...The soul that has but the slightest imperfection would rather throw itself into a thousand hells than appear thus before the divine presence. The soul ... aware that the impediment it faces cannot be removed in any other way, hurls itself into Purgatory... That is why the soul seeks to cast off any and all impediments so that it can be lifted up to God.
